The committee for the construction of a monument to the song "Echijo-bushi," an ancient folk song that originated in Shinjo (Kamiji Island), was formed and fundraising activities have begun. The association is moving forward with plans to erect a monument to the song on Shinjo Kamiji Island, and is calling for donations from local friends and people in the entertainment industry with a goal of raising 5.05 million yen in total.
The Koshijo-bushi is an ancient folk song that originated on Shinjo-Kamiji Island and was written in 1776. It tells the story of two beautiful sisters who lived in Koshijo Village, located in the southwestern part of the island, and the young men of the village who were in love with them. This song, which expresses the brightness, cheerfulness and kindness of the people who live on the island in a rich climate and beautiful natural environment, is now widely loved throughout the country, and is even sung as the set song for the top prize in folk song competitions sponsored by local newspapers in Yaeyama.
The executive committee is calling for donations, saying, "We ask for your understanding of the purpose of this event and your cooperation."
