ユイマール

カナダ・トロントを拠点に活動する写真家クレイグ・シュルツは、石垣島で三か月を過ごした。観光ではなく、この島の本当の姿に出会うために。そこに暮らす人々と向き合い、日常に流れる時間や小さな所作を見つめるために。

彼の写真は、ささやかな出会いから生まれていった。パイナップルを収穫する農家。モズクの網を修繕する漁師。シーサーを形づくる職人。出会いはいつも自己紹介から始まり、会話へとつながり、やがて信頼が生まれた。

繰り返し触れたのは「ユイマール」の心だった。差し伸べられる優しさの中に、その精神を感じた。彼のポートレートには、人と人、そして土地を思いやりながら生きる島の姿が映し出されている。

静かなまなざしの奥に、石垣という島の物語が息づいている。

Craig Schultz, a photographer based in Toronto, spent three months on Ishigaki Island. He came not for the version offered to tourists but to see the island as it really was. To meet the people who call it home. His photography grew from small encounters. A farmer harvesting pineapples. A fisherman mending mozuku nets. An artisan shaping shīsā. Each meeting began with an introduction, then a conversation, then trust. Again and again he encountered the spirit of yuimaru, felt in the kindness shown to him. In each portrait he sought to reflect an island where caring for one another and the land itself is part of daily life. This photo essay is his thank-you to the people of Ishigaki.
