Osamu Shimamura

Born on Hateruma Island in 1926. Became principal of Shirahama Elementary School in Taketomi Town in 1973. Became chairman of the Yaeyama Wild Bird Society in 1979. Retired from teaching after serving as principal of Ishigaki Junior High School in 1987. He subsequently became chairman of the Uogaki Society, Shiramizu Nature Consideration Society, Yaeyama Palm Citizens' Association, and Amparu Nature Protection Society. In 2009, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette, and in 2010, the Main Prize of the Yaeyama Mainichi Shimbun Culture Award.
